International Museum Day

Since 2017, FRAMS has celebrated International Museum Day with an annual lecture designed to profile the international nature of the Royal Alberta Museum, connecting it with global themes and events.

  • 2020 - Picking up the Pieces: How Museums Collect in a Crisis
    On May 21, 2020, we hosted Picking Up the Pieces: How Museums Collect in a Crisis with guest speakers Jan Ramirez, founding chief curator and head executive vice president of collections of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York, and Dr. Karine Duhamel, curator specializing in Indigenous rights at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg, to explore how museums preserve, reflect and challenge our understanding of life-changing events. The lecture was moderated by Julia Petrov, acting head of history at the Royal Alberta Museum.

  • 2019 - Discovering Our Country: The Historic Canada C3 Expedition
    On May 16, 2019, we hosted Discovering Our Country: The Historic C3 Expedition with keynote speakers Geoff Green and Dr. Mark Edwards, who told stories of their journey on the Canada C3 Expedition. The evening included the Alberta premiere of the documentary Canada C3: Coast to Coast to Coast.

  • 2018 - Connections through Collections: The Future of Museums
    On May 17, 2018, we hosted Connections through Collections: The Future of Museums with Dr. Dean Oliver, Director of Research at the Canadian Museum of History in Ottawa. He addressed the creation of compelling, respectful narratives in a museum setting, and how museums can create and maintain focus on their audience. What place do artefacts play in the role of telling stories?

  • 2017 - The Lowdown on Moving Downtown: Keys to Unlocking the Royal Alberta Museum
    On May 18, 2017, we hosted our first annual International Museum Day Lecture profiling the soon-to-open Royal Alberta Museum. A panel of people involved with the project discussed the impact of the new museum. The panel featured Donna Clare, Architect at DIALOG, Chris Robinson, Executive Director of the Royal Alberta Museum, Kalen Anderson, Director of Planning Coordination for the City of Edmonton, and Ian O’Donnell, Executive Director of the Edmonton Downtown Business Association, and was moderated by Chris Radojewski, President of FRAMS.
